Hungary Refuses EU Support for Ukraine Until Druzhba Pipeline Resumes

(MENAFN) Hungary has signaled it will withhold support for any European Union decisions favoring Ukraine until oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline is fully restored, the country’s prime minister said in a letter made public Tuesday.

In a letter sent Monday to European Council President Antonio Costa, Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that while “there are no technical obstacles to restarting the oil transfer via the Druzhba pipeline to Hungary,” the matter hinges on “a political decision by Ukraine.”

Orban noted that Hungary has historically supported EU measures favorable to Ukraine, including financial initiatives, but described the current situation as untenable. “As you are aware, I am one of the most disciplined and consistent members of the European Council. I fully understand your concerns. But you also certainly see the absurdity of the situation: we take a decision financially favourable to Ukraine that I personally disapprove, then Ukraine creates an energy emergency situation in Hungary, and you ask me to pretend that nothing happened,” he wrote. “This is not possible.”

He added that he is “not in a position to support any decision whatsoever favourable to Ukraine until they return to normality.”

The letter was released on the fourth anniversary of the start of the Russia-Ukraine war and comes just one day after the EU failed to reach an agreement on a new package of sanctions against Russia, with both Hungary and Slovakia opposing the measures, according to reports.
