Romania’s Social Democrats Reject Support for Muresan Government

(MENAFN) Romania’s Social Democratic Party (PSD) said Monday that it would not support the government proposed by Prime Minister-designate Siegfried Muresan, adding to the country’s ongoing political uncertainty.

The party’s National Political Bureau recommended voting against the proposed Cabinet, while the final position is expected to be determined by the PSD’s National Political Council, according to reports.

PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu said the party would only back an administration in which it holds a role. He also accused Muresan of intending to maintain policies that the Social Democrats argue have contributed to worsening economic conditions for Romanian citizens.

“PSD cannot vote for Siegfried Muresan,” Grindeanu said, while noting that the prime minister-designate had not approached him to request the party’s backing.

Romanian President Nicusor Dan formally appointed Muresan as a candidate for prime minister through a decree signed Monday.

Muresan now has 10 days to present his governing platform and proposed Cabinet to parliament, where the government will need to secure a confidence vote.

Before submitting his program, Muresan is expected to hold discussions with the National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR) and the ethnic Hungarian Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR).

He also plans to consult representatives of national minorities as part of the process of forming the proposed government.
